PROCESS & APPLICATOR DEVELOPMENT
FROM PROMISING RESULTS TO A PRACTICAL MICROWAVE PROCESS
Once feasibility work has shown that microwave processing has potential, AMT can develop the process, applicator configuration and supporting hardware needed to make it more controlled, repeatable and ready for higher-power development.
FROM LAB RESULT TO ENGINEERED PROCESS
A successful laboratory result does not automatically translate into a practical industrial process.
The next stage is to understand how the good result can be made repeatable, controllable and compatible with realistic throughput and operating conditions.
AMT develops the microwave delivery, process conditions, applicator geometry and supporting hardware together, while building in process monitoring and data collection so the development system generates the information needed for later scale-up.
The aim is to develop a process that can be measured, understood and characterised well enough to support the next stage of engineering and scale-up.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DEVELOPED?
Depending on the process, development may include:
PROCESS CONDITIONS
Required temperature and heating profile
Residence time and throughput
Heating rate and uniformity
Selective heating or reaction behaviour
Process stability and repeatability
PROCESS HARDWARE
Product or material handling
Batch, continuous, rotary or specialised configurations
Quartz, ceramic, silicon carbide or other process components
Mechanical integration and containment
MICROWAVE DELIVERY
Appropriate frequency and power level
Applicator geometry and field distribution
Impedance matching
Energy coupling and efficiency
Waveguide and microwave hardware configuration
MONITORING & CONTROL
Temperature and process instrumentation
Forward and reflected microwave power
Flow, throughput, residence time and other process-specific measurements
Data logging for development and scale-up
Power control, interlocks and operating sequences
HOW AMT DEVELOPS THE PROCESS
Development work is iterative. Calculations, simulation, practical testing and measured process data are used together to refine the microwave system and the process as understanding improves.
01 — DEFINE THE DEVELOPMENT TARGET
Establish the required throughput, temperature, residence time, product or reaction outcome, and the operating conditions the next-stage process needs to achieve.
02 — DEVELOP THE CONFIGURATION
Use calculations, simulation and practical testing to refine applicator geometry, microwave delivery, matching, process hardware and operating conditions.
03 — BUILD, INSTRUMENT & TEST
Configure or fabricate development hardware with the monitoring and data collection needed to measure how the process actually behaves.
Testing may include temperature, microwave power, flow, residence time, product response and other process-specific parameters.
04 — REFINE FOR SCALE-UP
Use the measured results to improve the process and establish the design information needed for higher-power testing, pilot equipment and later scale-up.
PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT CAPABILITY
AMT has the microwave power, applicators, matching equipment, simulation tools, instrumentation and fabrication capability needed to develop and modify test systems around the process being investigated.
Existing hardware can often be adapted for development work, while custom process components and applicator features can be fabricated in-house as the design evolves.
This allows the development system to change with the process, rather than forcing the process into a fixed laboratory setup.

FROM DEVELOPMENT TO SCALE-UP
Process development should establish a sufficiently well-understood and measured basis for the next stage of engineering.
The aim is not to finalise the commercial system at this point, but to establish the energy and power requirements, process conditions, applicator behaviour, monitoring and control requirements, and other parameters that will matter as throughput and equipment scale increase.
This information provides the basis for higher-power trials, pilot equipment and industrial scale-up.
HAVE A PROCESS READY FOR DEVELOPMENT?
Tell us what has already been tested, what worked and what the process needs to achieve next. AMT can help determine the development work needed to prepare it for higher-power and pilot-scale operation.
